Assignment#4

My notes:

  1. To change the subject: To stop talking about one thing and begin talking about something else especially when you don't want to talk about the first topic. You have to be careful when you say "Let's change another subject" because you could insult someone, you could be rude to someone by saying that out loud.
  2. Not getting any younger: May soon be too old to do something.
  3. Moving on: Is a phrase to indicate you want to stop talking about this topic and to talk about something else.
  4. Settling down: To get married and to start a family.
  5. Alone: To be by yourself without anyone else.
  6. Lonely: To feel sad because you are by yourself and don't have close personal relationship.
  7. Speaking out: To introduce a topic that is related to what the other person said but isn't exactly the same.
  8. To break up with: To end the romantic relationship with someone.Usually we use it as the  ending with boyfriends or girlfriends, not married.
  9. Leg man: Is an informal one, referring to a man who might be attracted to a woman who has long legs.
  10. And now for something completely different: To change the topic of conversation but also to perhaps make a little joke.
  11. Diet: Refer to a kind of food you eat, normally we use the word when someone is trying to lose weight, trying to eat such a kind of food in order to not be as heavy as they are right now to be weightless.
  12. Shedding pounds: To lose weight.
  13. My sentiments exactly: Used to show that you completely agree with what the other person has said.
It is about avoiding topics in conversation. The conversation occurs between Lila and George. Lila wonders why George is not dating. However, George don't want to talk about this topic, he want to change another subject but Lila still want to delve into this topic. In my opinion, when we start a conversation or a dialog, we need to make sure what we should talk to and what is should not to avoid the conflict. And of course many people might feel discomfort with some topics which relate to personal private issues such as age, salary, boyfriend or girlfriend. For example, in many cultural, it will be rude if you ask someone about their age. So you need to be careful what are you going to say in order to make a conversation become more comfortable. Besides. you still able to start a conversation by asking their personal issues in case you're really close to a person that you talk to.

Assignment#3

I'm really interested in learning English. For me,English is the most useful language in the world .I started learning English since I was 7 years old.But learning English is always a big challenge to me.There are 4 main skills in English:Speaking,Listening,Writing and Reading.Listening is my first obstacle. When I am practicing Listening,I try to understand what people say in the conversations or short stories and then I feel upset with myself because I am not utterly understand it.With a view to improve my Listening skill,I force myself to spend an hour per day to listen in English and write down what i hear. However,it is quite difficult for me to understand the content of the conversations or short stories in the first time so i will repeat it over and over again until I completely understand it.I'm afraid of listening test.I want to improve more about my Listening skill to get high score in my test.Till I attend Computer Assisted Language Learning class.I can say that is a very helpful subject. In this class,my teacher has provides many useful resources to us such as ESL Listening Lab,Linking and Accent Reductions.ESL Lab is an useful program for those who want to improve their Listening skill or English on the whole. I can learn many things on this program.Because it provides many audio files to learner. The audio files are divided into 3 levels:Easy,Medium and Difficult so it is easy to choose the level that right for me.Besides, the time of each audio is quite short and after listening there are 5 questions below the audio. It also provides Script for each audio.I think this is the most useful part of this program. From the Script,I am able to understand more about the content of the conversations and improve my grammar as well.In addition,Linking and Accent Reductions are useful too.I can learn exactly the accent of English native speaker like how to pronounce the sounds "to","for","of" and so on.It helps me a lot in pronouncing English words correctly. After I attend this class, how pleased I feel when I am listening in English with more confident.
